Late Night at Pier 39, San Francisco

Sometimes, it pays to arrive late.

San Francisco’s Pier 39, considered by many to be the city’s premier tourist trap, is usually teeming with both out-of-towners and locals. But we got there on a late night, Β famished after some poorly thought-out shopping and desperate for dinner. Some watering holes and family restaurants were still open but with most shops closed or about to close, the place was practically deserted.

We had no intention of buying anything and enjoyed just looking through shop windows at some gorgeous displays. I walked around and took lots of pictures — as anyone would, I think, who had been given access to a theme park after everyone else had gone home. πŸ™‚

  1. So this is what it looks like after all the people leave πŸ™‚
I’ve only ever seen it during the day when it is wall to wall people.
Absolutely beautiful shots!! I love the upstairs view of the top of the carousel.

  2. Tita, I’ve never seen Pier 39 look like this, ever. So beautiful. It is generally teeming… Awful. I am so not a crowd person. These photos are just stunning. You have captured it at its best. I have always wondered what it might be like without the crowds. I can’t wait to see more if your view of SF πŸ™‚

    • Thanks! πŸ™‚ I was googling one of the shops in Pier 39 and in almost all the pictures I saw of the area, it seems everyone was photo-bombing everyone else, haha. Finding a good vantage point is extra difficult when there are too many people. I’m glad we got there at a late hour. πŸ™‚

  3. Hi Tita! I agree with the others that is very special to have snapped such cool pictures with the crowds absent! Love the barrels of flowers with the carousel in the BG and what looks like the moon. The shrimp looks wonderful too.. πŸ™‚

    • Oh those gambas were good, Ms. Pix! πŸ™‚
As for the ‘moon’, it was either that or just a trick of the light. Or mayyybe an alien spaceship and in it are all the people snatched up from Pier 39, hahaha.

    • That’s how it looks in most images I’ve seen of it on the web, ‘wall to wall people’ as Angeline put it. Thanks for dropping by, Suzanne. πŸ™‚

    • Thanks, Madhu! The carousel looked so mysterious and right out of a scene from a circus movie that I took so many pictures of it. My sister had to remind me that we were there for dinner, hehe. πŸ™‚
